Passionate Couple Lives Nomadic Life Developing Eco-Projects
March 12, 2016
During my stay at East End Eden for a permaculture workshop, I was amazed to meet a group of conscious beings that had true passion and this couple, Shayna and Bryan, well they are something special. From the moment I opened my car door on the property I was welcomed with warm genuine love in the form of a hug from Bryan. Shortly after, I was inside having a conversation with Shayna about East End Eden, eco villages, her story and sharing with her mine. I was immediately lit up by everything she was saying. I knew then I had come to this workshop for so much more than I even imagined. The sense of community and bonds made over this short 2 day workshop screamed to me: WE NEED MORE LOVE AND COMMUNITY! We need to be the educators and listeners the world needs to heal. We need to follow passion and believe in ourselves. Love ourselves more! Here is a beautiful account of Shayna and Bryan’s story.
Half of their relationship has been long distance pursuing their own passions and leveling up their leadership and skills in permaculture.
At Emerald Village Shayna incepted NuMundo (then, Project Nuevo Mundo) with the love and incubation of the incredible mentors and entrepreneurs who founded Emerald Village. NuMundo is a platform that connects people to transformational travel experiences around the world. In the winter of 2013, Shayna left Emerald Village to embark on NuMundo’s “Earth Odyssey”, 4-month sustainability bus tour with 22 permaculture and natural building practitioners from San Diego to Panama.
Bryan stayed back at Emerald Village to finish his last 4 months with his corporate job, minimized all of his possessions (and Shayna’s) down to a backpack where they met 4 months later in Nicaragua and began their 6 month travel building relationships with ecovillages and permaculture farms in Nicaragua, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
One of their favorite projects in South America was living in the Peruvian Amazon for 2 months researching and interviewing farmers of land regeneration and sustainability projects all around Puerto Maldonado and Las Piedras region and developed a report to guide ARCAmazon in building The Amazon Center.
After spending a fall in San Francisco hosting workshops, attending conferences and networking – they decided to take 1 month to travel through Mexico with no plan, just for fun and falling deeper in love before they were going to be apart again for 4 months. During that trip NuMundo found out they got accepted to Start Up Chile, a 40k grant and 7-month business mentorship program in Santiago, Chile.
In March of 2015, Bryan took a 4 month permaculture apprenticeship with Terra Genisis International in the last remaining coastal jungle of Ecuador in the small village of Caimito and Shayna visited him for 2 weeks. Bryan’s apprenticeship allowed him the space and separation from modern society to reflect on what truly motivates him. The strong jungle energy and connection to nature through permaculture, had strong lessons and required him to find his power from within. This became the beginning of his clear calling towards regenerating the planet through permaculture.
Bryan swept me off my feet (literally) when he carried me on his back up a mountain for sunset when I hurt my foot. His physical and emotional strength, resilience and state of mind was incredibly grounded and inspiring.
During the final month of Bryan’s internship, Shayna was in Chile with 2 of her teammates representing NuMundo and going through Startup Chile. They lived in a beautiful cob home together for 7 months in an ecovillage called “Blowing in the Wind” right next door to our incredibly brilliant friend, Carolina Pissarro who founded a Sustainability and Cultural Center called Pio Pio. This was the summer in Chile that Bryan and Shayna’s first big collaborative project was born called “Ignite Experience”. They organized this in collaboration with their new friend Marcelo, Founder of Evoluzion. You can read all about it here! During our time in Chile they also completed the MVP of the NuMundo website!
They finished their marathon by completing the Thriving Changemakers Intensive. After this incredible whirl-wind of couchsurfing and doing this while living out of a backpack, they couldn’t be more ready to ground. That’s when they found East End Eden in Ojai, California.
Oh and PS we met there, so I think East End Eden is also building a community of people who want to live for and off the land with passion.
Bryan just completed his Permaculture Design Certification at VerdEnergia! Shayna is meeting Bryan in Costa Rica to hold a NuMundo full team work session at a permaculture farm, Finca Morpho to add new, amazing features to the NuMundo platform. They offered facilitation and networking at Envision Festival 2016 while they are out there. Next they will be meeting me at Lucidity Festival for some major transformative fun and a beautiful networking gypsy lounge to share and spread the passion.
They are now beginning to step even more fully into their power as individuals and as a couple by synthesizing all of their wisdom and experience into clear offerings and a new website that will contain this magic. They will be offerings workshops, valuable blog posts, speaking, consulting and 1 on 1 guidance in the areas of project/organizational development, personal transformation and empowerment, full service marketing, the art of community/social permaculture and land stewardship. Stay tuned for 2016 Earth Journeys to be announced!
