LA SOMBRA PROJECT: TRANSFORMING OUTDOOR SPACES WITH CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

OVERVIEW:

This project was a testament to the power of innovative design and problem-solving. I partnered with the owners of La Sombra, a charming short-term rental in Joshua Tree, to address a unique challenge and transform their outdoor living space into something truly magical.

The Challenge

The original deck at La Sombra didn’t have proper permits, which jeopardized the property’s STR (short-term rental) permit—a common issue in the desert. Permitting would have been costly and time-consuming, so we needed a creative, permit-exempt solution.

Our Solution

1. Deck Reconfiguration
• Removed three sections of the original deck.
• Reduced the deck into two smaller, permit-exempt sections.
2. Landscape Redesign
• Leveled sand and spread three tons of pebble rock.
• Added railroad ties for structural accents.
• Repurposed beautiful rocks and pots from the property to create steps and infill landscaping.
• Designed seamless transitions between dining, lounge, and the cowboy tub areas.
3. Mediterranean-Inspired Magic
• Preserved the property’s old-world Mediterranean charm with a modern twist.
• Transformed the outdoor living space into what felt like a "fairy garden," with a balance of elegance and practicality.

The Results

The transformation exceeded expectations—both mine and the clients’. The new design:

• Enhanced the outdoor space’s functionality and aesthetic.
• Alleviated permitting concerns entirely.
• Created an inviting environment that feels cohesive with the property’s style.
