HOUSE RENOVATION BEFORE AND AFTER
Oct 09, 2023HOUSE RENOVATION BEFORE AND AFTER
In the captivating landscape of Twentynine Palms, California, near the majestic Joshua Tree National Park, my latest home renovation project unfolded as a testament to the importance of investing in and caring for your property. In this breathtaking desert oasis, where home design trends gracefully evolve with the sands of time, I embarked on a journey to breathe new life into my dwelling.
Today, I'm excited to take you on a tour through my recent home renovation, a personal endeavor that has not only refreshed the interiors but also boosted the resale value of my Twentynine Palms, California Adobe Project. From the soothing perfect nearly white paint that revitalized my spaces to the charming addition of a barn door, every design decision was carefully curated to create a harmonious and modern living space.
In this post, we'll explore remarkable before-and-after transformations, shedding light on the thoughtful design choices that have brought this desert home to life. Join me as we traverse through the heart of this house, from the powder room to the kitchen and living areas, celebrating the blend of rustic elegance and contemporary flair that now graces my living space. Let's uncover the secrets behind the enhanced charm of the front door and the rejuvenated allure of the living room, all while savoring the warm embrace of the durable laminate wood floors that connect it all together.
HONORING THE PAST: PRESERVING UNIQUE CHARM
Before delving into our renovation project, it was vital to pay homage to the original character of the house. This house was previously only owned by one family that really took care of the property and you could tell they really loved it. Rather than discarding everything, we chose to retain certain elements that spoke of its unique history. Address signage, hardware, and light fixtures were carefully preserved to infuse the home with a sense of nostalgia and character.
While balancing a budget-conscious approach, we sought to maximize the home's resale value. Local thrift stores and out of box sales were treasure troves of budget-friendly finds, including vintage furniture and hardware that added distinctiveness to the property. These unique pieces not only enhanced the home's appeal but also its potential resale value.

STRATEGIC INVESTMENTS: BOOSTING RESALE VALUE
One of the most critical aspects of our renovation project was strategically focusing on areas that have the greatest impact on resale value. In California, several key features tend to improve a property's appeal and resale potential:
CURB APPEAL:
First impressions matter. Landscaping improvements, fresh exterior paint, and a well-maintained entrance can significantly increase the perceived value of a property. These investments not only attract potential buyers but also improve the property's curb appeal and resale potential.
Upgrading the front door to an option that is energy efficient with some windows and painting a nice pop of color using Benjamin Moore paint which we carried over to the courtyard fence as well.
UPDATED KITCHEN AND BATHROOMS:
These are often the most scrutinized areas by potential buyers. We modernized the kitchen with updated countertops, fixtures, and appliances, as well as the bathrooms with new vanities and fixtures. Such improvements can yield a substantial return on investment when selling a home.
PRIMARY SUITE:
A well-appointed primary suite with ample closet space and an en-suite bathroom can be a major selling point. We incorporated these features, enhancing the home's appeal to potential buyers.
HOME OFFICE SPACE:
The growing trend of remote work has made a dedicated home office space a valuable addition. We transformed an underutilized area into a functional workspace, catering to the demands of the modern buyer. This space is multifunctional integrating the kitchen and living areas as an entry table, mail station, charging station, office workspace and kitchen eating space.
INDOOR OUTDOOR LIFESTYLE: EMBRACING THE CALIFORNIA LIFESTYLE
California living is synonymous with indoor-outdoor harmony. To accentuate this experience, we reconfigured the living spaces, introducing expansive sliding glass doors that seamlessly connected the indoors to a covered patio. This alteration allowed natural light to flood the interior while forging an intimate connection with the breathtaking desert landscape.
WELLNESS INFUSED: A THOUGHTFUL APPROACH
We also took a mindful approach to wellness and nature integration on the property for this home renovation. To enhance well-being, we transformed an old shed into a wellness house bonus room. Insulated and well-ventilated, this space serves as a home office and wellness retreat. It boasts ample natural light enhanced by the off white paint and easy access to the serene outdoor spaces.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY: A SUSTAINABLE INVESTMENT
In a state known for its commitment to sustainability, investing in energy-efficient upgrades can greatly enhance resale value in a home renovation. We made several energy-efficient upgrades:
-
Upgraded Insulation: Improved insulation in walls, attic, and crawl spaces.
-
Installed Energy-Efficient Windows and Doors: Replaced old windows and doors with energy-efficient models.
-
Installed High-Efficiency HVAC Systems: Opted for a ductless mini-split system in each living space.
-
Designed Natural Ventilation: Used strategically placed windows, skylights, and vents in the kitchen and living rooms.
-
Installed Shade and Window Treatments: Used shading to block direct west facing sunlight in each living space which is especially important during hot California summers in the desert.
LANDSCAPING: MAXIMIZING THE VIEWS
Strategic window placement and outdoor living spaces allowed us to maximize the views of Joshua Tree National Park and Wonder Valley, CA. We also designed a garden with native plants and drought-resistant landscaping to conserve water and frame the view.
Our home renovation in the Joshua Tree vicinity embodied a multifaceted approach. We celebrated the essence of California living while strategically focusing on key features and investments that elevate a property's resale value. Through preservation, creativity, and calculated upgrades, we transformed this desert oasis into an enticing prospect for potential buyers, realizing the full potential of this extraordinary location.
Renovating a desert home near Joshua Tree on a budget was a testament to our creativity, resourcefulness, and profound appreciation for the California lifestyle. Through thrifting, upcycling, unconventional finds, and a commitment to sustainability, we transformed an aging dwelling into a contemporary oasis that epitomized the spirit of California living and mindful design.
