JOSHUA TREE INTERIOR DESIGN - NATURE MOOD BOARD
Sep 30, 2023JOSHUA TREE INTERIOR DESIGN - NATURE MOOD BOARD
When planning a room makeover or deciding how to design the interior of your home, it can be hard to visualize. Creating a mood board for interior design not only helps you decorate your space, but it makes it easier to see the various possibilities for your home.
At its core, a mood board is a collection of design ideas put together in a visual representation. An interior design mood board is usually a collection of paint colors, furnishings, artwork, and decor elements. It can be as simple or intricately detailed as you want.
I like to create a nature mood board when coming up with interior design ideas for a space. I was initially inspired by The Joshua Tree House designed by Sara Combs after my mother bought me her book. Sara and Rich, her husband, are interior designers who created a stunning, tranquil oasis in Joshua Tree National Park. Their home in Joshua Tree, CA is the inspiration for many homes in the area, as well as around the world.
Plus, since modern desert decor is super popular right now, I thought I’d share a Joshua Tree-inspired interior design mood board that you can use as inspiration.

TEXTILES
Textiles play a major role in interior design, especially a modern, boho design. In a space inspired by Joshua Tree, I would include numerous textiles like rugs, draperies, tapestries, and wall hangings.
A few pieces I would include in a Joshua Tree interior design/nature mood board are:
EARTHY TONES AND PALE PASTELS
Paint color is one of the most important aspects of interior design. It, both literally and figuratively, sets the tone for your space. For a modern, boho-style Joshua Tree-inspired home, I recommend using earthy tones and pale pastels. More specifically, colors like sage, terracotta, and creme.
Some of my favorite Behr paint colors from Home Depot for our Joshua Tree Nature mood board are:
PLANTS
Sara Combs describes the aesthetic of the Joshua Tree House as “natural and bohemian” with a focus on a laid-back, boho-inspired style. In their book “At Home in Joshua Tree,” Sara and Rich share their four design mantras, one of which is “Always Add Plants (Real Ones).”
With that in mind, I chose to include various potted cacti, succulents, orchids and olive trees in my mood board. Creating a space where you’re surrounded by live plants is an easy way to ensure that you feel completely immersed in nature.
ARTWORK
Another great way to bring the natural elements of Joshua Tree into your home is with artwork. Whenever possible, I like to use pieces from local artists. For a more budget-friendly option, you can incorporate mass-produced pieces that add to the space. Opt for landscapes or abstract artwork to add personality.
Some great options include:
-
Nature prints by local photographer and friend Ashley Werbel
-
Kate and Laurel Sylvie Lone Joshua Tree Framed Canvas Wall Art
FURNITURE
Furniture often takes center stage when it comes to the design of a space. Whether you’re shopping for dining tables or living room furniture, it’s important to consider how each piece will impact your overall design.
For a Joshua Tree-inspired space, I like to use as many natural elements as possible. Some pieces that would work great include:
